RS class: North Pole ice-resistant self-propelled platform

On 10 April 2019, the official keel-laying ceremony of the North Pole ice-resistant self-propelled platform was held. The platform is being constructed to the class of Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS, the Register) for the Federal Service for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring of Russia (Roshydromet) at JSC Admiralty Shipyards (United Shipbuilding Corporation member). The platform design is being implemented within the state programme Socioeconomic Development of the Russian Arctic Zone.

RS class notation: KM(*) Arc5[1] AUT1-C HELIDECK-F Special purpose ship.

The platform is intended to perform a wide range of scientific research in the Arctic Ocean. The capacity of fuel tanks is designed considering the fact that the platform will stay adrift in the ice for two years without docking in port. Another unique technical solution is a combination of high ice classes. Due to the unusual hull shape, the platform will be forced out by ice in drift conditions, with the load distributed on the sides and bottom. Thus, the North Pole platform is being constructed to ice class Arc5, while the hull strength along the sides and bottom will correspond to ice class Arc8. This approach will ensure safe operation of the research platform in difficult polar water conditions when compressed by multiyear ice.
